Cylinder liners are used in particular for larger types of engine such as e.g. those found in commercial vehicle or marine applications. As far as these cast components are concerned the thermal loads caused by heat from the combustion process are overlaid with dynamic stresses. Here, deep rolling resulted in an increase of more than 200% in the dynamic strength. An EF tool is shown in the picture.
