Axle arms and wheel flanges in vehicles are components subjected to rotating bending loads. Diametrical transitions from the shaft to the flange onto which the wheel is attached are critical areas in this case in which stress concentrations occur. Deep rolling quickly became widespread in this area due to the significant increases in service life. Applications range from tractors and sports cars to commercial vehicle axles and coaches. The picture shows the application of a hydraulic controlled HG tool on an automobile wheel flange. Here, part of the shaft end as well as the radius and part of the plane surface are being deep rolled; fatigue strength of this safety-relevant component has been significantly increased.
